Do mouse pads of different materials affect mouse sensitivity and positioning accuracy?

The reason why mouse pads of different materials affect the sensitivity and positioning accuracy of the mouse mainly lies in that the mouse sensor (whether optical or laser) needs to "identify" the surface texture, reflectivity, friction, etc. of the mouse pad. The physical properties of materials with different surface textures will affect the "recognition rate" of the mouse sensor.



In terms of specific materials: Cloth mouse pads have fine textures, moderate friction, and good light absorption. They provide a stable "reference texture" for optical/laser sensors, ensuring accurate positioning and balanced sensitivity performance. They are suitable for occasions requiring precise operations (such as shooting games and design drawing). Resin/plastic mouse pads have a relatively smooth surface with regular textures and high hardness. The mouse moves with low resistance, resulting in higher sensitivity (the cursor moves a larger range on the screen over the same distance). However, an overly smooth surface may lead to "excessively large texture recognition intervals" when the sensor moves quickly, making their positioning slightly inferior to that of cloth pads. They are suitable for needs involving rapid movement, such as MOBA games.


Metal or glass mouse pads have high smoothness and glossiness, and the mouse moves with very low resistance. Theoretically, their sensitivity is the highest. However, an overly smooth surface or even the absence of textures can easily cause the optical mouse sensor to "lose reference" and thus skip frames (positioning deviation). Although laser mouse sensors have higher adaptability, excessive reflections can affect accuracy. They are more suitable for scenarios pursuing "extreme smoothness" or being used with highly sensitive laser mice, but they may instead be unstable and affect use.

In simple terms, materials affect the stability of the sensor, including surface texture density, friction, reflectivity, etc., which in turn affect the sensor's sensitivity (smoothness of movement) and positioning accuracy (the correspondence between the cursor position and the operation). When choosing a mouse pad, it is necessary to consider the type of mouse (optical/laser) and the usage scenario (precision/rapid movements).
